Superdrug underwent a period of rapid transformation including the introduction of several new store formats with Advance at the forefront of the design.
Key facts
- Over 300 stores rolled out so far
- Four different lighting schemes designed, manufactured and delivered
- Over 10,000 gear tray assemblies
- 250,000 PCBs
- 15.5 million LEDs
- 9km cables harnesses
Brief
Advance previously worked on a store design for Superdrug, Cardiff, however a more cost effective design option was required across a wider store rollout.
The brief required consistent illumination for a perimeter halo surround and header illumination with no spotting.
Development
Using the latest 4014 technology, the balance was between output and energy consumption. A key element of the brief was to design a 4014 LED board that was suitable for the carcass design.
Advance developed a modular carcass system that allows gondolas to be built from 4ft to 6ft using common parts from a kit system.
Advance also developed a bespoke gear tray that was easily accessible for maintenance. The final design was completed after two rounds of prototypes to achieve the desired look.
Furthermore, Advance was asked to undertake further work for Superdrug including consultation on providing advice on electrical specification for all brands.
Delivery
Advances’ in-house project management team managed the project throughout, ensuring all parts were procured on time. Ensuring a scheduled delivery plan of the parts to the brand manufacturers was crucial.
Summary
The new look and format was met with critical acclaim from the beauty community and widely hailed as game changer in attracting a new market to Superdrug.
